Work introduction
Scarlattiana is a shimmering, playful, fun-loving, spirited, gorgeously scored concerto for piano and small orchestra, a kind of fantasia on themes of keyboard sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) – sometimes played on the piano, sometimes by the orchestra, now in their original form, then carried further by Casella’s imagination, like a commentary or as variations. Three of its five movements are fast, witty, highly rhythmical, their spiritedness occasionally reminiscent of Stravinsky.
