Work introduction
The piece "Shadow Games" was written in 2023 for the Call for Scores of the Ensemble Wiener Collage in cooperation with IGNM Austria. The instrumentation called for in the call appealed to me because it offers a wide variety of sound possibilities, and so I was quickly inspired to write a piece for just these six instruments (flute, saxophone, trombone, accordion, guitar and double bass).
The composition consists of six sections, but each is based on a series of harmonies, tone sequences and rhythms that run like a thread through the piece. They are based on number symbolism as well as summations of the overtone series. With this basic material, the instrumentalists grope their way from one shadow play to the next; always following the same basic structure, yet always developing new atmospheres.
The use of conventional notation and aleatoric represents the synchronization of two levels: the "invisible" world of light and the "visible" world of shadow.
