Work introduction
Slow Music was written as a companion for my piece Man Shoots Strangers from Skyscraper. Structurally, it is the opposite of that piece, as only one process occurs throughout. Beginning with a series of very slow chords, punctuated by a melody, the music is gradually overtaken by fast notes, until they have entirely overrun the texture. The harmonic rate however, remains slow throughout.
Slow Music was commissioned by the Philharmonia for its Music of Today series, with support from the Royal Philharmonic Society, the PRS Foundation, the Radcliffe Trust and the John S Cohen Foundation.
