Work introduction
August Stramm, born in 1874, was one of the most innovative poets of the First World War; his poems, made up of single words grouped together in strange rhythms, give an almost physical impression of the front: you really get the sense that Stramm is struggling to find a statement for his own experience (as a German commander) of the horrors and insanity of war. He was killed in action in September 1915.
I chose five poems and tried to give each a distinct musical character, each a painting in miniature of this extraordinary verse.
Stramm Gedichte is dedicated to James Wood and the New London Chamber Choir.
