Work introduction
String Quintet for two violins, viola, cello, and double bass.
The piece was first performed on 27.02.2009, at Wanda L. Bass School of Music (Oklahoma City University, USA) during the Society of Composers Inc. Region VI Conference 2009.
The composition contains three contrasting parts (I. Lento. Molto legato II. Doppio movimento. Espressivo III. Presto) performed attacca. It is composed almost like a tale for double bass with string quartet because a lot of double bass part is soloistic. This is clear at the beginning of the piece. Listeners familiar with string quartet ensembles need some time to welcome the big, low-sounding string as an equal member of the group. Quite chords give space for double bass harmonics to sound above them. The first section, Lento is a melancholic lyrical tale. The next section (espressivo) is more focused on dialog, counterpoint, and engaging, passionate themes. The last section (presto) is the most folklore oriented. It is a distant imitation of the character of folk music and traditional dances.
