As a graduating senior from college (Brown University | May, 2000), I was only privy to some of life's imminent changes. I was aware that my mother's battle with bone cancer would likely be a losing one (she succumbed to the disease the following year), and as if this life-altering loss weren't enough, 9/11 transpired days before her death while I was living in New York City.
Among the works I composed in my senior year at Brown is this short piano piece titled The Farewell. Although I couldn't have known the full extent of what would be left behind, I certainly felt as if I were entering into a new era, and that my (relatively) carefree life up to that point would be forever lost.
Change is actually the only constant. Cherish the past and allow yourself to grieve for its loss, but also allow yourself to find peace in the imminent changes that lay ahead.
