Work introduction
Whether in the south of France, Scotland, Germany or elsewhere, you can find them everywhere, these fine, delicately built, inconspicuous insects that sneakily attack humans year after year in the evenings and into the night during the most beautiful time of the year, turning their victims into frantic, desperate insect hunters. I have sometimes wondered why these beasts are not among the species that are dying out due to climate change, like bees and other nice little animals. What a pity! No, these bloodthirsty beasts are indestructible, climate-resistant and will always remain with us and humanity, presumably as a punishment from God for our sins.
In this piece, I musically describe a typical scene in which an annoying, bloodthirsty sucker incessantly and acoustically scares its victim, attacks him and gets on his nerves. After many missed blows (pizzicati), the final deathblow is struck and the seemingly redeemed hunter can finally go into a deep sleep, but only if he is lucky and another beast is not already waiting for him.
This composition epitomises pure, musical realism and is certainly a good opportunity for a soloist who wants to use his humorous side as well as his virtuosity to lighten up the atmosphere in the concert hall. I could therefore well imagine this crazy solo piece as an effective encore.
