Work introduction
This quiet, four-part funeral music was initially sketched on December 17, 2021, the first anniversary of the death of my father-in-law Krzysztof Krzywo?, who unfortunately passed away within a few weeks after a short and severe illness.
I always admired Krzysztof’s unwavering dedication to his various passions, never doing things halfway and always remaining fully focused. One major passion of his was music, another the forest and the hunt – he combined both by teaching himself in his last years to play the hunting horn and even composed for it. After the mournful chromatic passages of the preceding movements, one can certainly notice a soothing echo of this natural horn music in the last epitaph…
When ?ukasz Zimnik, principal flautist of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, approached me on the aforementioned December day, with the idea to write a piece for alto flute solo, my vision of this piece immediately took shape. I moulded the spontaneously created sketch into its final form next fall. Shortly thereafter, the Four Epitaphs were premiered by ?ukasz at the 8th Polish Flute Meeting.
