Work introduction
Vival-departures for string orchestra is inspired by the music of Antonio Vivaldi. Although there are no direct quotes of Vivaldi's music in Vival-departures, there is a Vivaldi-like interlude that appears in different forms and becomes a point of departure for musical development. The work is about 14 minutes long and is in one movement with several contrasting sections. In addition to the influences of Vivaldi's music, you'll hear influences of Blues and Rock music also. Vival-departures would add a contemporary flavor to any program that includes Vivaldi's music.
Vival-departures won the Silver Medal (for Outstanding Achievement in Composition) at the 2023 Global Music Awards.
The video performance is the U.S. Premiere in New York on February 2, 2024 by the North/South Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Max Lifchitz. The audio performance is by the Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine under the direction of Volodymyr Syvokhip from the album "Lviv1" on the Phasma Music label (distributed by Naxos.) "Lviv1" was awarded the "Best Classical Recording" from the 2023 Clouzine International Music Awards.
What is necessary to perform this work?
You can determine how many string players to use for the performance of Vival-departures. The group can be a baroque-sized string orchestra to fit with a Vivaldi work on your program or be as large as you wish. There is a short solo violin cadenza in mm.94-111 for the Concertmaster or a designated member of the Violin I section. The Double Bass pizzicati in mm.12-78 will sound stronger and more balanced with the rest of the orchestra if at least one of the double-basses were amplified. If any of the double-basses have the ability to go down to the low C, please play the lower notes when indicated in parentheses.
