Work introduction
The piece "Yu Diao" utilizes folk music from Henan, China, as its source material and constructs the musical structure and the relationship between the pipa (a traditional Chinese lute) and the piano in a format of "monologue" - "solo" - "duet" - "ensemble." This emphasizes the differences in performance styles between Chinese and Western instruments and the inherent subtle harmonious blending of sound.
The composition employs a variation technique, creating playful interactions between the pipa and the piano. The entire piece exhibits both musical tension and lyrical and humorous characteristics, while distinctly showcasing elements of traditional Chinese regional music.
This composition was created for my friend, a pipa player from Henan, China.
