Work introduction
This duet for two English Horns (which are neither English nor horns),
was written in 1987 for John Walker and Stephanie Mendyk. The first
movement begins with a canonic introduction leading to more freely
composed contrapuntal passages. The second half of the movement is a
commentary on the famous English horn solo in Cesar Franck's D minor
symphony.
The second movement alternates arpeggiated passages in thirds with episodes
based on other themes from the Franck symphony.
esprit de cors can also be played by any two like woodwind instruments
with a written tessitura from C4 to F6.
