Description
"hora fugit - ombra venit - fides manet - lux transit / time flies - the shadow comes - faith remains - light passes: This inscription on the sundial on a historic house facade in Passau immediately fascinated me because of its meaningfulness that goes beyond the measured time. The daily course of the sun appears to mirror the course of human life. I was tempted to concentrate exclusively on this short motto consisting of four times two words when setting it to music. The challenge was to find a sensually perceptible equivalent in the music for each line and thus give it a very special, unique effect." (Philipp Ortmeier)
Philipp Ortmeier composed the cantata Horologium for choir and orchestra from 15 to 27 October 2022 as Composer in Residence at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. The world premiere took place on 7 June 2024 in the Mariä Himmelfahrt parish church in Fürstenzell, performed by Ensemble Sonare Linz and the vocal ensemble of the University of Passau under the direction of Marius Schwemmer.
"This is how choral music of the 21st century must sound if it is to inspire young people to sing in choirs." (Gertrud Brunnbauer, Passauer Neue Presse, 11/06/2024)
