Description
"Panichida" is a section from the work "Consolation for the Forgotten Souls" for choir, solos and orchestra by Ulf-Diether Soyka, which adds new parts to the traditional Requiem. Appropriate ecumenical and interreligious texts from different cultures were set to music for it. "Consolation" lasts about as long as the Requiem composition (which was first performed in Klosterneuburg Abbey near Vienna).
"Panichida" was composed for five-part mixed choir (soprano - mezzo - alto - tenor - bass) and orchestra in 2006 based on a text from Bulgarian Orthodoxy in German translation, and soon became the most popular part of "Consolation" at funerals.
The text is very short, and can be sung well by small amateur choirs who do not speak German. "Panichida" is traditionally notated and easy to sing. There are the following scores of it here: With choir and organ as well as with choir and piano, and in addition the individual parts for soprano, for mezzo-soprano, for alto, for tenor and for bass. Other versions (with choir and string orchestra or with choir and orchestra) have also been published by the publisher.
The recording (a shortened version of the version with string orchestra) is from the church of St.Peter in the centre of Vienna, conducted by Prof. Georg Huppmann.
