Description
Tenebrae Responsoria - Feria Sexta (Good Friday Responsories) is the second part of Gyöngyösi's Great Week series, a cycle of 9 choral works commissioned by the Cantemus Choir of Nyíregyháza and their conductor Soma Szabó. The works can be performed together, as a cycle or separately.
Good Friday is the climax of the Easter cycle in the Catholic liturgy, the day of Christ's death on the cross, with wonderfully poetic, intense and poignant texts that help the believer to experience the Passion, to empathise with Christ, Judas and the disciples, and to be strengthened in his own faith.
The nine works are divided into three nocturnes, each containing three works. The focal works of the cycle are the concluding nocturnes, No 3 (Vinea mea electa), No 6 (Animam meam dilectam) and No 9 (Caligaverunt oculi mei), written for double choir. The composer also uses tuned glass cups at the end of the latter.
The choral cycle is recommended for professional and advanced amateur choirs.
