With his String Quartet No. 3 (1983), Alfred Schnittke embarked on a new stylistic path. While in earlier pieces the musical quotations often had an ‘irritating’ effect and were consciously introduced as contrasting, alien presences, here the citations used (from Beethoven and Lassus) are, for the first time, introduced into the musical flow and even brought into a relationship with one another. This new version for string orchestra was arranged by Peter Manning.
