Description
This work was written on the island of Hoy, part of the Orkney Islands off the north coast of Scotland. I was teaching young composers on a summer school with Peter Maxwell Davies and one evening my host's son's boat was shipwrecked in a storm on his way back from the mainland. The strange and magical island on which I was working, alongside the idea of a shipwreck in a storm, led me to the Shakespeare play The Tempest. The fact that I was also teaching composers who were creating many fascinating, strange and new sound was even more appropriate. This guitar piece is the result, and plays with the contrast of the ethereal and the more rugged natural sounds in the course of its duration. The work derives from only a few pitches and expands from there.
