Work introduction
‘… that you might think that a long lost manuscript of guitar duets by Purcell had turned up.’ (Review British Music Society / March 2021)
This suite numbers among Henry Purcell's later works for keyboard instruments and was first published posthumously in 'A Choice Collection of Lessons for the Harpsichord or Spinnet'.
In addition to its impressive artistic impact, this suite is a work of particular interest, as it provides clear insights into how Purcell made use of important compositional features from Italian and French Baroque, which had long been the leading styles of the day, combining them to create an unmistakeably personal tonal language of his own – a multifaceted idiom which enabled him to create an intensive and profound emotional atmosphere while using relatively few notes.
