Work introduction
Stella arises out of Avant-guarding Mompou, a project promoted by the Catalan pianist from Girona, Maria Canyigueral. The task aims to generate ties between contemporary music of new creation and the collection Cançons i Danses (Songs and Dances) by the aforementioned composer.
The piece takes as an inspiration the well-known Cantiga n. 100 by Alfonso X, Santa Maria Strela do día, which is the same reference that Mompou uses in his tenth Song. He specially emphasizes the initial melodic line following a descending conjunct motion and the intervallic leap of fourth – essential to nourish the resonating chords and other procedural characteristics of the composition.
Fundamentally, the title of the piece refers to two integrating aspects of the new score: the priorly mentioned Cantiga and the trace (stella) of delay and filtering treatments. Simultaneously, the piece intents to create a fusion of the original Song’s lyricism and the movement of the Dance – specially at the end of the piece.
