Work introduction
Programatic in concept and cyclical in form, “Misterios Chilotes” (Mysteries of Chiloé) puts under spotlight women of the complex mythology stemming from the chilean archipelago known as Chiloé. It is after his first of several visits to Chiloé that the mythology of the region overtook his imagination in a hypnotic manner, in particular the female supernatural characters. This work takes the listener hand in hand with the composer on his journey of discovering the archipelago, coming in contact with these mystical women, all presented with their own musical and motivic identity. The composer as the protagonist bares the “main theme” which weaves in and out through the concerto. Through the use of carefully crafted handwork of orchestration, the composer attempts to musically paint the sense of magic and mystery in which he was engulfed. At the end of the journey, the composer finds himself awaking inside of a ghost ship along side all the previously encountered women, all expressed through the reappearance of their representative musical themes as the closing gesture of the work.
