Work introduction
Piano quintet : Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass & Piano.
Four movements :
1 Houses of the moon [8']
2 Music for the king’s bath [8']
3 Dreamland [11']
4 Pursuit of happiness [10']
Tales After Midnight was composed at a bassist’s request for a companion piece to Franz Schubert’s ‘Trout’ Quintet — which itself was written as a companion piece to a quintet by Johann Nepomuk Hummel, with the uncommon instrumentation of violin, viola, cello, double bass and piano.
Both the ‘Trout’ and ‘Tales After Midnight’ are approximately 40 minutes in length, and melody is the propelling force in both, but the emotional worlds of the two quintets are distinctly different. The movements of Tales After Midnight unfold informally, in the manner of stories told when mundane concerns are far from the mind.
What is necessary to perform this work?
