Work introduction
This work was originally commissioned by the Fairhaven Singers of Cambridge. The first of the two poems, "Graves of Infants" is in eight parts. Technically it's an exploration of the harmonic effect of stacking thirds so intensely that clusters and implied polytonality are created. The second, "Insects", extents the idea of "word-painting" from English madrigals of the Renaissance into unorthdox uses of consonants of the text, glissandi and other effects.
