Work introduction
Violin Concerto written for Una Sveinbjarnardóttir.
Sceadu is part of my research on landscape and its transformation into music. The core of the work is the relationship between two perspectives of the chosen landscape, the distance and the proximity. These two points of view are reflected in the music by the interactions between the Soloist and the Ensemble.
The 1st movement was written in 2018, for my MA. graduation's concert [Under the guidance of Þuríður Jónsdóttir, Páll Ragnar Pálsson and Daníel Bjarnason]. The 1st movement was premiered on the 6th of May 2019, Salurinn, Kópavogur (IS). Performed by Una Sveinbjarnardóttir, Caput Ensemble and Guðni Franzson.
The 2nd movement was written in 2019 and premiered (alongside the 1st mvt.) on the 29. January 2020 during Myrkir Músíkdagar / Dark Music Days Festival (IS). Performed by Una Sveinbjarnardóttir and Caput Ensemble, under the direction of Guðni Franzson.
- The second movement was supported by RÚV/STEFs Composers’ Fund.
Una is the leader of the Reykjavík Chamber Orchestra (Kammersveit Reykjavíkur) and 3. concertmaster of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra (ISO). She has premiered a large number of compositions and she is active in the creative process as an interpreter as well as composing her own music. Among her solo concertos with ISO are Beethoven, Shostakovich nr.1, Philip Glass nr.1, Atli Heimir Sveinsson, Páll Ragnar Pálsson and Þuríður Jónsdóttir. Una has worked closely with Björk, Jóhann Jóhannsson and Atli Heimir Sveinsson. She has worked with Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Musikfabrik and Bedroom Community. She is a founding member of Siggi String Quartet (awarded at the Icelandic Music Awards 2019).
