UE's publishing history is thus to a large extent identical with the music history of the 20th and 21st centuries, whose challenges it tackles with verve and courage. With groundbreaking ideas, UE is grappling with the digital age and developing timely solutions to respond to current developments that also affect music publishing. Universal Edition, in cooperation with newzik, was one of the first music publishers to launch a digital offer for sheet music in real time.
With UE's professional support, composers can publish their works in digital and printed form via the new tool scodo and distribute them to orchestras and musicians all over the world. In this way, UE has responded to the fact that, in addition to composing, composers often have to deal with time-consuming administrative necessities such as the production of their sheet music, its sale and distribution, rights management and the settlement of rights. With its many years of expertise, Universal Edition provides support for many of these tasks. In addition, the newly acquired composers publish in the environment of established big names in the music business. ‘In our view, the traditional model of publishing contracts must adapt to this rapidly evolving world - scodo is UE's answer to these developments. UE can thus once again open its doors wide to contemporary currents and is prepared to give space to much that is new,’ summarises Astrid Koblanck. In this way, UE puts its mission statement ‘We shape the future of music’ into practice with visionary determination.
